1935 - 2016 After a brief illness, Donald Lavery passed away peacefully in the Perth Hospital surrounded by his family on March 23 in his 81st year. Born in East York, Toronto on July 25 1935, Don leaves behind his loving wife Jessie (Howell) Lavery. He was the son of John and Helen Lavery (McCurdy) and brother of Barbara Shevchenko (Alek) of Smiths Falls. Don was predeceased by his brother Jack Lavery (Fran). Don was the much loved father of Steven (Danielle), Glen and Michael (Marie-Bell). Don will be missed by his seven grandchildren Christopher (Erin), Jake, Cooper, Reilly, Elle, Alexia and Athea. Don will also be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, friends and other family members. Don and Jessie raised their three boys in Markham and in 1990 they purchased and operated James General Store in Plevna until 2005 when they retired and moved to Sharbot Lake. On Sunday March 20, 2016, Warren (affectionately known as “Tinker”) at age 82 years passed peacefully after a four year battle with Alzheimer’s, at the Long Term Care facility in London, Ontario. Beloved husband of Wyn Sargeant and the late Lucy Sappolla. Much loved and respected step-father to Bob Sargeant (Katherine), Kathy Cota (Art), Jen Cox (Mitch) and the late Tom Sargeant and their families. Loving father of Nancy Kalopsis (Ken) and Larry Branscombe (Trish) and their families. Warren served his county for 25 years and worked for 20 years with Corrections Canada. Interment of ashes to follow at a later date in Kingston, Ontario. His tortured mind and broken spirit are now at rest.

Re: Prime Minister Trudeau
There are probably many folks who read Edward Kennedy’s recent letter (Re: Prime Minister Trudeau, Mar 31/16) and believe he is ‘telling the truth’. When responding to what is fictional prejudice as if it is fact, is always challenging. I will try. 1. It is expected that of the 25,000 Syrian refugees that are fleeing terrorism, 97% of their offspring will achieve a post secondary diploma and like the Vietnamese of the 70s, will contribute significantly to our economic well-being. 2. The Liberal Canada Child Benefit is as follows: for a family earning $45,000 with two kids, they would receive $9850 tax-free instead of Harper’s taxable $5900. 3. The police forces across the country favour legalization of marijuana taking control away from the biker gangs and taking over control of who can use it. 4. As for ‘pro-life’ discussions, I offer this. When women got the vote (in Quebec it was in the 40s) they demanded control over their own bodies, rather than religious men controlling their reproductive choices. Beloved husband of Sylvia Powers, passed away on April 23rd after a long battle with cancer at his home near Mountain Grove. He was born on April 17, 1940 in St. Catharines to Charles Victor Powers and Ada Marjorie Jewiss. Loving father of Maria (Peter Lerch) and Elizabeth (Tim Meyer), foster father of Laura (Brad Smith), and Robert Knight and treasured grandfather of Chris, Kim, Melody, Trillian, Calvin, Amber, and Haley and stepgrandfather of Andreas, Dylan, William, and Annamarie. Dear brother of Mary Ann Martin, Jean Holder, and Ethel Simpson, predeceased by Bud Powers and Martha Jessome. A graduate of RMC, he served in the airforce, then was a popular teacher in the high schools in Bracebridge, Ottawa, Argenta, B.C, and Monteverde, Costa Rica. He found pleasure in being a volunteer fireman, singing in the Glee Club, playing hockey, and ski patrolling. Through International Rescue he responded to disasters in Indonesia, New Orleans, Haiti, and other places. A celebration of his life will take place at the Olden Community Hall in Mountain Grove on May 15th beginning at 2 pm.
